&*Ting Kuan-p’eng was a court painter under the Ch’ien-lung Emperor (r. 1736-1795). This work is a copy of the holy sculpture of the bodhisattva Mañjuśri at Mt. Wu-t’ai, his earthly abode. According to the artist’s inscription in the lower left, the Ch’ien-lung Emperor made an offering to the Mañjuśri sculpture on a tour of Mt. Wu-t’ai in the spring of 1761. Returning to the capital, he personally made a copy of it in ink and ordered Ting Kuan-p’eng to add colors, the entire project taking seven months before finally completed. Since the Ch’ien-lung Emperor, who boasted himself as a secular incarnation of Mañjuśri, personally made a copy of the sculpture at Mt. Wu-t’ai, it testifies to his special religious feelings toward Mañjuśri.
